GLP-1 medicines are drawing intense interest, but health experts say they cannot resolve South Africa's diabetes crisis on their own. Deeper answers lie in earlier diagnosis, stronger primary care, healthier food environments, and long-term patient support. Diabetes was the country's leading underlying natural cause of death in 2023, claiming 27,692 lives, or 5.8% of all recorded deaths, according to Stats SA.
Why GLP-1 is not enough on its own
GLP-1 receptor agonists mimic a hormone that regulates blood sugar and appetite, helping patients control glucose and, in some cases, lose weight; certain products also lower the risk of some heart and kidney complications in appropriate patients. That promise explains the attention. But specialists caution that it should not eclipse the systemic drivers of the disease.
