TWO of South Africa's largest open medical schemes have unveiled their 2027 medical aid contribution increases. Discovery Health Medical Scheme (DHMS) is raising rates by an average weighted increase of 8.2%. Momentum Health is raising rates by 7.9%. Both framed the increases as a response to mounting medical inflation.

Discovery: 8.2% on average

DHMS contributions will rise between 7.4% and 8.9% from 1 January 2027. Two-thirds of beneficiaries will face increases below 8%. The scheme said the 8.2% weighted average was about 2.5 percentage points lower than would otherwise have been required. Additionally, its increases over the past three years had run 5.1 percentage points below those of the next six largest open schemes.
