The number of South African children receiving HIV treatment at sites supported by the United States government almost halved in the year to September 2025.
New research found that the number of children receiving antiretroviral treatment at sites supported by the US President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, or PEPFAR, fell by 30,880. This represented a decline of 45%.
South Africa recorded the largest absolute reduction among the countries included in the study. The findings are due to be presented at the 26th International AIDS Conference in Rio de Janeiro.
